WELCOME TO CHAUTAUQUA -- where historic figures like Thomas Jefferson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King, Jr. come
to talk with us -- a Colonial Williamsburg-on-stage. Scholars, costumed as famous people, bring our history and literature
to life. It's authentic humanities education that is lively, interactive and fun!
And it's not a Chautauqua performance unless audience questions are the most dramatic and exhilarating part. In the guise
of entertainment, Chautauqua gathers generations from diverse cultures together to think about and discuss the problems of
the day. We're not about answers; we're about asking questions.

AMERICA: THE LAND
In 2008 we explore our most basic
yet deepest cultural influence: the Land. Solutions to problems of climate change, dwindling fossil fuels, species extinction,
disease epidemics, and hunger lie in an engaged citizenry enabled to think critically about the answers. And so to help us
think about these problems, we've invited to Greenville:
Black Elk, Sioux Holy Man and Nature Mystic;
James Beckwourth, the African American Mountain Man and sub-chief of the
Crow Nation;
Teddy Roosevelt, the President who led the world in preservation of natural wilderness;
Rachel Carson, author
of "Silent Spring" and fountainhead of the modern environmental movement.
John J. Audubon, the artist who taught
us, as the Native Americans did, that "the world is not given to us by our
fathers, but borrowed from our children".
